Maldives guide

Clear lagoons, coral reefs and villas over the water: the Maldives is about sea, sun and switching off.

Most resorts sit on their own island, so the place you stay is also where you spend your holiday. Choose by atmosphere, reef and transfer type, then plan for snorkelling, diving and lazy days.

Best time to visit

December to April is the dry season with calm seas and lots of sunshine. May to November has more rain and wind, but also good value and great conditions for some diving.

Where to stay

  • Resort islandsOne island, one resort: all-inclusive options, water villas and house reefs.
  • North and South Malé atollsClose to the airport, often reached by speedboat.
  • Outer atollsQuieter and more remote, usually reached by seaplane or domestic flight.
  • Local islands (for example Maafushi)Guesthouses and a lower budget, with local life and nearby sandbanks.

From the airport

Velana International (MLE) sits on its own island next to the capital, Malé. Resorts arrange transfers by speedboat, seaplane (daylight only) or domestic flight, so share your flight times with your hotel before you travel.

Getting around

Between islands, travel is by boat or seaplane. Resort transfers are booked through the resort; public ferries and speedboats link Malé with local islands.

Don't miss

  1. Snorkelling the house reef
  2. Swimming with manta rays or whale sharks (in season)
  3. A sandbank picnic
  4. A sunset dolphin cruise
  5. Malé's fish market and Old Friday Mosque

Good to know

  • Alcohol is available at resorts but not on local islands.
  • On local islands, dress modestly and use designated bikini beaches.
  • Late arrivals may need a night near the airport before a seaplane transfer.
  • US dollars are widely accepted at resorts.
