October to April, when days are warm and pleasant. May to September is hot; plan sightseeing early in the morning.
Where to stay
- ZamalekA leafy island in the Nile with embassies, cafés and calmer streets, central for most sights.
- Downtown and Garden CityClose to Tahrir Square and the Nile Corniche, with many hotels overlooking the river.
- GizaHotels with pyramid views, ideal for early starts at the plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
- Heliopolis and New CairoModern districts near the airport, good for short stays or business trips.
From the airport
Cairo International (CAI) is northeast of the city. Allow 45 minutes to over an hour to Downtown or Zamalek, and more to Giza, depending on traffic. Use a pre-booked transfer, an official airport taxi or a ride-hailing app.
Getting around
Ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to get around. The metro is cheap and useful for central areas and has women-only carriages. Traffic is heavy at peak hours, so group your sightseeing by area.
Don't miss
- The pyramids and the Sphinx of Giza
- The Grand Egyptian Museum
- Islamic Cairo, Al-Azhar Mosque and Khan el-Khalili bazaar
- The Citadel of Saladin
- A felucca ride on the Nile at sunset
Good to know
- Agree the fare before taking a taxi without a meter, or use an app.
- Dress modestly, and cover shoulders and knees in mosques; women should bring a scarf.
- Tipping (baksheesh) is part of daily life: keep small notes for guides, drivers and hotel staff.
- Drink bottled water, and carry sun protection at the archaeological sites.
